Location: The larynx or “voice box” is situated at the back of the tongue and extends to the tip of the trachea (windpipe).
Function: Protects the trachea and allows us to produce sound.
Unique Fact: The larynx has four vocal cords: two true (active) vocal cords and two false (inactive) vocal cords.
Associated Chakra: Throat (5th Chakra)
Have all four of your vocal cords become inactive lately? The two cords that are supposed to be inactive are called “false” vocal cords. Have your two true vocal chords become false? In other words, are you not speaking your truth about a particular issue? Perhaps something or someone is silencing you. Or maybe you’ve been silencing yourself, protecting your heart by way of your throat. The problem with our own silence is that it can grow without our even noticing. As time progresses and we still haven’t spoken our truth, it becomes harder and harder to release our voice. It’s as if our voice atrophies from lack of use.
If the larynx is whispering its way into your cards today, this might signal a time for raising your voice and speaking your truth. What truth are you holding deep in your throat? How long has it been there? It could be that this truth has just arrived and is waiting for the right time to come out. Now may be the time. If this truth has been lying in secret for a while, perhaps it’s time to gently coax it out. The Throat Chakra is the embodiment of Voice; it is about communication, expression, and speaking your truth. This chakra is also about creativity. How might your truth manifest itself once released from the depths of your throat? Will it become a conversation with a friend? A journal entry? A painting? Whatever form it takes, your voice, your truth will have a chance to live a new life outside the confines of your silence. Perhaps you will even feel a freedom and lightness in letting it out.
- The color blue: wear blue scarves, necklaces, ties. Give your throat a soothing blue to help activate and open this chakra.
- Singing: It doesn’t matter if you think you can sing or not. Sing to exercise your voice box. Let those vocal chords vibrate; give them a chance to do their magic. Sing songs you know, make up songs, or sing karaoke. What matters is that you express yourself and have fun.
- Neck massage: Often, when we are holding our voice back, our neck muscles tighten. Get a neck massage or do some self-massage, soothing taut muscles.
- Writing: Where does your silence live? When you know you should speak up and you don’t? Write about the experience of holding back and not speaking your truth? What was the result? What did you feel in your body?
