Inspire Me Thursday: Put Some Wings On It

You know that catchy line from Portlandia: “Put a bird on it”?  Well, I do in fact put birds on things, namely my art, but I also add wings to people, animals, creatures, and objects.

For this “Inspire Me Thursday,” my motto is “put some wings on it.”

Winged Illumination, mixed media art journal entry by Courtney Putnam.

I created this mixed media collage in my art journal tonight to honor my “put some wings on it” tendencies, and to perhaps extract some deeper meaning from adding wings to not only images in my art, but to real live people in a symbolic way.

When I am feeling weighed down by my world, I sometimes imagine growing some wings to lift me up, to help me see a new perspective, to open my heart, and to add some lightness to an otherwise heavy worry state.

We can do this for each other, too. Whether through direct action or through sending good energy, we can send each other wings.

Try this: At least twice this weekend, find a way to give yourself wings as well as to another person. How does possessing wings make you feel?  What do you notice in another person when you send them a pair of wings? Time to feel a little lighter and fly, everyone!

About Courtney Putnam

I first came to healing work through art and writing. Creating collage art and poetry in particular allowed me to deeply understand the benefit of self-expression in the healing process. But, I also began to see the benefit of bodywork (manual work in the form of massage and energywork in the form of Reiki) as keys to unlocking the emotional stresses we hold in our bodies. I became a Reiki practitioner in 2002, received an MFA in Creative Writing in 2003, received my massage license in the spring of 2006, and became a Reiki Master in 2010. In my practice I bring together these three areas -- the body, the mind, and the spirit (or energy body) -- so others may experience profound and positive change in their lives.
